eh, as for cards, can we haf cards like happy family and donkey as well??
i get bored playing bridge.. needs too much thinking..
hey everyone! yanlian lixin and nana came my house today, and we discussed a bit about the chalet... sent an email to all of you.. oh. i didn't send to sijia cos her email's got problem... just called her anyway. :)

here are the important points anyway:
1. Each person pls pay 5 dollars more k? to cover the bbq food...
2. Everyone pls meet at Harbour Front MRT at 10... (yes venus, pls don't come at 11) we'll go shopping at cold storage yep!
3. We'll then all meet up at the bus terminal at 12...

Hike's over woohoo!

This is the first time I've walked so much since exams started... my feet still feel a little funny now. Haha... to think i used to walk 40+ km in a day without much problems.

Oh.. so how is anybody planning what to bring for the chalet? I was thinking we all put down what we want to see at the chalet, and we all share by bringing what we can. I hope to see a couple of board games, risk, twister, hotel... emm... lots of food, and music so we can keep the whole of sentosa awake while we party the night away hahahaha

Thursday, November 27, 2003

hahah.. its alright jinyang.. :) aiyo.. my thumb is aching now.... cos when we went to the SITEX fair just now, er.. we.. spent about 45 mins at the XBox section... :) ahha... so spastic lah! Lixin and i played basketball... i got lakers! but if you think shaq is good you must be kiddign... (err.. was i controlling?) shaq always jumps in midair and trys to block an invisible man. Gary Payton runs around with the ball. (naturally its a foul)... and then there was once i didn't know where the guy ran to.. the next moment he ran into lixin's player... naturally it was a foul... sigh. and lixin refuses to shoot unless YAOMING had the ball?!!!?!?! dimmit. one player game and still, the lakers couldn't block anything. tsk tsk... (in case any lakers fan is reading this, pls note that it was a game and i was controlling lakers so all the above is really self slapping. (: )
sorry ruoling... i coudn't resist

ALL 15 down. No more to go :)

Saturday, November 22, 2003

yoohoo peeps! i'm finally back up here. after banning myself from the net (not the comp... lalala) for dunno how many weeks. sheesh. 6 more days. i simply cant wait. dunno if i can go for the hike on 28th. my mum seems to want me to finish my prom business before i go for chalet and that leaves me with only 4 days i think. VENUS!!! you reading any of this? when are we going prom shopping?!?
Taking A Day Off From Work

So you want a day off. Let's take a look at what you are
asking for:

There are 365 days per year available for work. There are 52
weeks per year in which you already have 2 days off per week,
leaving 261 days available for work. Since you spend 16 hours
each day away from work, you have used up 170 days, leaving
only 91 days available.

You spend 30 minutes each day on coffee break, which counts
for 23 days each year, leaving only 68 days available. With a
1 hour lunch each day, you used up another 46 days, leaving
only 22 days available for work.

You normally spend 2 days per year on sick leave. This leaves
you only 20 days per year available for work. We are off 5
holidays per year, so your available working time is down to
15 days. We generously give 14 days vacation per year, which
leaves only 1 day available for work and I'll be darned if
you are going to take that day off!

Hmm.... interesting. Comments?

Anyway, when do you all want the hike? It'll be a one day affair so it wont take up too much of your time. Eh... try to have it before the chalet so you all can recover before the prom.

oh well. just for the fun of it :)
or this...
http://www.realcoffee.co.uk/Article.asp?Cat=TreeToCup&Page=9#ChemicalSolvents

Chemical solvent decaffeination:

Firstly, the green beans are treated with steam, under pressure. This treatment swells the beans, increasing their surface area and making the caffeine easier to remove. The next stage is extraction of the caffeine by a solvent, again under pressure, at a temperature close to the boiling point of the solvent. Ideally, the solvent should remove caffeine selectively, without affecting the coffee in any other way. After decaffeination, only minute traces of the solvent are left in the coffee. Nevertheless, the chemical used must be sage, so that these traces do not affect the health of anyone drinking decaffeinated coffee. The safety of solvents used in decaffeination is tested in animal and human studies and reviewed by government scientific authorities. Solvents in current use which pass these stringent criteria include methylene chloride (dichloromethane) and ethyl acetate.

The caffeine which is removed from the solvent by distillation has many commercial applications, for example in pharmaceuticals and as a flavouring agent. Traces of solvent still adhering to the beans are forced out by further steaming and the coffee is then dried.

Decaffeination by supercritical gas:

At temperatures above their 'critical point' under pressure, gases behave rather like liquids and can be used as solvents. Supercritical carbon dioxide is used as a selective solvent for caffeine. It is applied to previously steamed green coffee at temperatures of about 70 degrees C and at high pressure. The caffeine is separated from the gas by rinsing or by absorption and the gas recirculated. In this method the wax layer of the coffee bean is retained and nothing but the caffeine is removed

Two Types of Decaf Processes

There are two types of decaffeination processes. The first is called the Swiss Water Process method. Decaf coffee made with this method can be found at most gourmet coffee shops, organic food grocery stores. The other decaffeination processes use some sort of a chemical solvent. In this article, I'll explain the essential aspects of the chemical removal process then I'll discuss a specific variation of the chemical process termed the Super Critical Carbon Dioxide method.

........

The Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Method

The Supercritical Carbon Dioxide method is a chemical method that is somewhat dissimilar to the other chemical methods; therefore it deserves special attention. This method uses carbon dioxide at 250 - 300 times normal atmospheric pressure. Carbon dioxide in this form looks like a liquid in terms of its density, but it has the viscosity of a gas. It is a very effective solvent at the high pressures. When the coffee beans are exposed to the solvent, the caffeine migrates to the solvent. When the removal of caffeine is complete, the now caffeine-rich carbon dioxide is passed through either an activated charcoal bed or a bath of water to absorb the caffeine for re-use. Like other chemical methods, the Supercritical Carbon Dioxide method removes 96 - 98% of the caffeine. Carbon dioxide is inexpensive to obtain and non-toxic.

7 down. 8 to go.

good idea : last minute mugging before the paper, trying to remember why elements have such irrational behaviour

bad idea: skipping lunch and having only coffee in the stomach resulting in a craving for a hot plate of fried kway tiao, and trying to figure out why benzene and cO2 are not good solvents for decaff coffee

whOa.... animal have rights! i had a feeling it would come out
6 down. 9 to go.

Monday, November 10, 2003

"yo dude! hey dude!"..

it must be a case of listening to too much radio.. class 95 was playing this advertisement abt two guys laughing the whole day.. =P

hey dewen, you'd better go running everyday, tho i'm not sure if even that will help... you can't leave running to determination if you're not a born runner... but you never know!! haha.. just place this big placard that says PROM!! or CHALET!! in front of you... maybe that'll work...

the quest for completing the tys seems impossible. i feel like frodo now... carrying this invisible weight... thats just getting heavier as we get closer to mount doom... :[ then when next week comes.... it'll be the final showdown. the ending of the trilogy. BUT! before that, we'll have to battle evil agent smith aka hugo weaving aka Elrond the elf. YEP! MATRIX!!! YEAH! IN THE COMPLETE ROW REDUCED ECHELON FORM!! oops. i think i'm going mad...

btw, nana's blue creature aka monstar says *cookie* to everyone.. i reckon he means *hi*... :/
